Another wave of departures into early retirement awaits us: Companies call for favouring working pen

The problem associated with massive departures of workers into early old-age retirement has eased in Slovakia. While at the end of last year employee departures significantly troubled employers, at the start of this year the situation calmed down. However, the calm is only temporary, as the state expects yet another wave of departures at the end of the year. Employers warn against underestimating the situation and propose a concrete solution that could also appeal to working pensioners.

Dramatic or catastrophic. Social partners described the situation in enterprises with such terms during an extraordinary session of the tripartite at the beginning of December last year. It also dealt with the topic of early retirements, since it was causing significant problems for enterprises.

Currently, the Ministry of Labour already claims that in January 2024 they recorded a significant drop in applications for early retirements compared to the end of last year. However, problems may still appear at the end of the year.

The Secretary General of the Association of Industrial Unions and Transport Andrej Lasz pointed out for the website oPeniazoch.sk that even though the situation with departures into early retirement has calmed down to a certain extent, the problem of labour shortage remains unresolved.

"For reducing the number of people going into early retirement is only one side of the coin. On the other side we are facing the challenge of how to replace those who have already gone into retirement,"
adds Andrej Lasz.

The Ministry of Labour currently claims that it is monitoring the situation related to early retirements and also analysing possible fluctuations in the future. However, what the measures to improve the situation might look like and whether the ministry is also considering the solution proposed by employers, the ministry does not yet want to reveal.
