The rapid abolition of the Whistleblower Protection Office weakens investors' confidence in the rule

The Association of Industrial Unions and Transport (APZD) is closely following the government's intention to abolish the Whistleblower Protection Office through fast-track legislative proceedings. Strong and credible protection against corruption is one of the foundations of the rule of law, and undermining it can have a direct impact on the investment environment in Slovakia.

The government has long announced a reassessment of the whistleblower protection system. Nevertheless, a fundamental change is once again being submitted through an accelerated process, without sufficient expert dialogue and without a detailed impact assessment. In such a sensitive area, we see no reason for an expedited approach that reduces the transparency of the legislative process.

The protection of whistleblowers of anti-social activity is a key element of corruption prevention. This is a mechanism relied upon not only by citizens, but also by businesses and foreign investors. Any intervention that may weaken its independent functioning or the stability of the rules is closely watched in the international environment.

Slovakia is going through a challenging period in which it is necessary to strengthen confidence in the rule of law and increase certainty for investors. Sudden interventions in the whistleblower protection system may increase the perceived risk of corruption, which is reflected in investment decisions and may negatively affect the arrival of new projects or the expansion of existing production.

The APZD proposes that any fundamental changes in this area be discussed through the proper legislative process and after a thorough professional debate. Functioning and professionally managed public institutions are as important to a modern economy as a skilled workforce or quality infrastructure.

The Association of Industrial Unions and Transport is ready to be a constructive partner in seeking solutions that will strengthen confidence, transparency and legal certainty for employers in Slovakia.
