The government is again loosening the rules for employing foreigners

The government approved an amendment to the act that will speed up the processing of work permits for people from third countries, increases quotas for workers from Asia and simplifies the processes for the arrival of people into shortage occupations. Employers welcome these changes, because they will help them obtain the needed workforce from outside the EU faster and more efficiently. Companies will be able to take on up to 45 percent of people from countries outside the EU for shortage positions, which will ease the labour shortage in Slovakia.

The government is again loosening the rules for admitting workers from so-called third countries, that is, outside the European Union. After recently increasing the number of special visas for drivers and employees in industry, it is now simplifying the processes for the arrival of people into shortage occupations. The Republic Union of Employers calculated some time ago that the country is permanently short of approximately 80 thousand workers.

"With an unemployment rate below 4 percent, we have reached a state in which whoever wants to work is already working,“
said the Secretary General of the Association of Industrial Unions and Transport Andrej Lasz.

Getting a foreigner into the production process at one of the plants in Slovakia takes, according to Lasz, 11 to 18 months. The approved changes could therefore speed up the processes and employers welcome it. In practice this will mean, for example, that if they need to take on a person from a country outside the EU, they will not have to wait for the issuance of a temporary residence permit.

Companies will, in addition, be able to take on more foreigners from so-called shortage occupations, the list of which is maintained by the Central Office of Labour. Until now they could take on a maximum of 30 percent of people from countries outside the EU for these positions. Now this limit moves to 45 percent.
